My friend Brandi was game to join me with her kids on a little bluebonnet hunt this afternoon, and thanks to a tip on twitter we found a little patch away from any possible traffic. The tricky (spooky) part was that it lay smack dab in the middle of an old cemetery.<br />
<br />
I mean, I knew we were headed to "the Buffalo Gap Cemetery" but I assumed it was an open place with a couple rolling hills... Wrong! This was a straight-up fenced-in acre of decrepit tombstones. I believe Wyatt decided to rest his weary bones on top of a small stone perch called Unknown, while Jackie, full of ideas for poses, said, "You know what would be pretty? If I stood next to that sign!" That <i>sign</i> was a 4-foot headstone.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIqwQ7qH56o73Ic4ZGZhjx3n7OxcVN7YSMaexqpfdCfHD1cnIBnZLijczPkEsTlxwBst6Md_7ChPjtUAPEofYX1wC420QBscexdXth2BqnTay4GnPI-lBSUaQFo9tJXlkX46ErnguJA1w/s1600/Fordyce+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIqwQ7qH56o73Ic4ZGZhjx3n7OxcVN7YSMaexqpfdCfHD1cnIBnZLijczPkEsTlxwBst6Md_7ChPjtUAPEofYX1wC420QBscexdXth2BqnTay4GnPI-lBSUaQFo9tJXlkX46ErnguJA1w/s320/Fordyce+4.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>Here's a pic where you can tell we're in a cemetery. I think I forgot to mention to my husband that we ended up there. Good thing it would <i>never</i> cross his mind to read my blog. <br />
<br />
Now it's time to ask the obvious question: where are the bluebonnets? They're all over the place in the above pictures, but because the only time we could go was smack dab in the middle of direct sun, I had trouble getting shadow-free faces <i>and</i> getting the background, so the best pictures turned out to be the ones where the kids are in the shade of a tree while the background is in full sun. I try encourage my clients to do sessions within a couple hours of sunrise or sundown but that's not often feasible. My favorite, favorite lighting is an overcast sky. It's not as versatile as a rising or setting sun in a partly-cloudy sky, but it definitely makes for a more fuss-free photo session.<br />
<br />
By the way, the bright, blown out background and pastel features is quickly becoming my favorite style of portraiture, evidence of which can be found in my last four sessions. Does anyone have any feedback for me? Should I make it my signature look as I grow my business?<br />
<br />
Anyway, regardless of the whole <i>interment</i> setting, the kids had a lot of fun and so did Brandi and I! Kate was pretty mellow most of the time but the fresh air was so good for her. I'm a bad mom and sometimes the only fresh air we get is a 10-15 minute evening walk, so this was just what we needed.<br />
<br />
And hopefully Kate will make it back to Texas each spring for more pictures just like these.<br />

Most ladies like to wait until their bump is a little larger before taking maternity pictures, but Julia really wanted me to be the one to do it (so sweet!) so we had to get it done before I move to Little Rock. We just did our best to accentuate the little guy (or girl, but it's <i>totally</i> a boy).<br />

She's a senior at Cooper High School who very smartly offered to swap babysitting services for a few senior pics in her cheer uniform. I attempted an in-home "studio" for the first time and got only a couple usable shots out of it, but it was fun trying. Then we headed outside where Morgan had to <i>work</i> for her pictures!<br />

I asked Morgan to bring a friend since it would be more fun and get more relaxed and natural photos as a result. Plus, I can make them hold my stuff. :) So Morgan brought Rachel, and within a week I had another senior client! We took all these within one block in downtown Abilene and finished off with Rachel holding her letter of acceptance from Texas A&M. Congratulations!<br />

<br />
Tonight I decided to take some of the pictures I snapped over the weekend and played around in Photoshop to try and achieve a similar style.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWnP7xChLKxqX3SQzhPqp_3Bg7l9P6pnkcGxxAr5RGADZt0OVxIFIDV6U4qqP2b7eOKWycvXgcZQx1QW-WYpOEwgXUY7i-YrraH69JaXudy6tVleMuAGHJr45yPEcl5yso3A1HqoPiWTo/s1600/MEM-knockoff-before.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="319" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWnP7xChLKxqX3SQzhPqp_3Bg7l9P6pnkcGxxAr5RGADZt0OVxIFIDV6U4qqP2b7eOKWycvXgcZQx1QW-WYpOEwgXUY7i-YrraH69JaXudy6tVleMuAGHJr45yPEcl5yso3A1HqoPiWTo/s320/MEM-knockoff-before.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
This is the one that turned out the most SNL-ish. I think it looks pretty cool! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPggnRF6LrnZkmj3iVqeB9UrBQ2jARdL3r1aalNKTIrLvSm2jTwIL8IuA9_0fcetewOATSx_zUB7rgSKlKEk7UX1EsV7fh4UgeR_Nqd9AicUowjZatmLBzfu58Kckjm2wyOpZy37qPeKM/s1600/MEM-knockoff-after.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="319" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPggnRF6LrnZkmj3iVqeB9UrBQ2jARdL3r1aalNKTIrLvSm2jTwIL8IuA9_0fcetewOATSx_zUB7rgSKlKEk7UX1EsV7fh4UgeR_Nqd9AicUowjZatmLBzfu58Kckjm2wyOpZy37qPeKM/s320/MEM-knockoff-after.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
These aren't a true before and after, because I used an already-edited version that had been uploaded to Facebook, which downgrades the quality quite a bit. The original large unedited images are in the other room and... well...<br />
<br />
Once again, ladies and gentlemen, Before and After. <br />

Not like <a href="http://kellerwoman.blogspot.com/2011/03/and-cooke-razzie-goes-to.html">last time</a>.<br />
<br />
I got two spontaneous requests for this recipe this week, in addition to the fact that I was attempting them again, so I figured I'd rehash the how-to on the ol' bliggity blog. Next time I can just send a link instead of texting a photo of my dirty, poorly abbreviated recipe card. There are so many dos and don'ts with this thing that it's good to read through before attempting.<br />
<br />
So, here goes.<br />
<br />
<hr />3/4 c butter<br />
1 1/2 c sugar<br />
2 T. water<br />
12 oz. chocolate chips<br />
2 eggs <br />
2 1/2 c flour<br />
1 1/4 T. baking soda<br />
1/2 tsp salt<br />
2 boxes Andes Mints<br />
<br />
Melt the first four ingredients over medium-low heat, stirring frequently. Don't let the chocolate get too hot. Once it's smooth (it won't be glassy smooth because of the granulated sugar, but you'll be able to tell when the chips are fully melted), remove it from the heat and let it cool for a while. Add the eggs.<br />
<br />
Combine the remaining dry ingredients and then pour in the chocolate mixture. Stir well. Dough will be pasty but thick. Cover and refrigerate for one hour.<br />
<br />
Roll the chilled dough into 1-inch balls (don't go bigger -- you'll be sorry!) and place at least 2-3 inches apart on a well-greased cookie sheet. I like to use Pam. The only time I used butter was the time they turned out terrible. I don't know if the two are related, but better safe than sorry.<br />
<br />
Bake at 350 for 12 minutes. The cookies will be puffy in the oven until the 11-12 minute mark. After they flatten, that's your cue.<br />
<br />
While they're in the oven, take this time to unwrap your Andes Mints. After the cookies come out, leave them on the cookie sheet and drop one mint onto each. After a couple of minutes the mint will be melted enough to spread around like icing. Note -- these are meant to be thin, crispy cookies. Don't hate if you were expecting something else.<br />
<br />
Cool on a wire rack and enjoy! You can also freeze them. I haven't done that before, but this is my grandma's recipe and I know she always made them well before Christmas and kept them in the freezer.<br />
<br />
And now, for those of you who think I'm way too wordy, here's a version you can select and print:<br />
<hr />Melt together:<br />
<ul><li>3/4 c butter</li>
<li>1 1/2 c sugar</li>
<li>2 T. water</li>
<li>12 oz. chocolate chips</li>
</ul>Chill for a while, then add:<br />
<ul><li>2 eggs <br />
</li>
</ul>Sift together:<br />
<ul><li>2 1/2 c flour</li>
<li>1 1/4 T. baking soda</li>
<li>1/2 tsp salt</li>
</ul>Pour chocolate mix into dry ingredients, mix well and refrigerate one hour. Roll chilled dough into 1-inch balls and place 2-3 inches apart on greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 for 12 minutes. Top with one Andes Mint while cookies are still hot. Swirl with knife after the mint melts. Transfer to wire rack.<br />
<br />
Yields about 4.5 dozen cookies... exactly enough for 2 boxes of Andes Mints.Laurahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01354942888519762512noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7065667238646891957.post-91504925502151628952011-12-05T10:14:00.001-06:002011-12-05T10:15:03.752-06:00No business like snow business!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjyjWZC7228NTvTga_dv5NRu_cmR2jYTE9dzEvU0st4ZumSuvur8JNOzu0yDfzuS48Jyc0hQsczn0p6ZlWm_tvL_UhAyzE7s1D85yJh-PfPh_xk4YRSSDp00nZsQfLActJ8CxREW-buN8/s1600/kate-in-the-snow.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjyjWZC7228NTvTga_dv5NRu_cmR2jYTE9dzEvU0st4ZumSuvur8JNOzu0yDfzuS48Jyc0hQsczn0p6ZlWm_tvL_UhAyzE7s1D85yJh-PfPh_xk4YRSSDp00nZsQfLActJ8CxREW-buN8/s320/kate-in-the-snow.jpg" width="214" /></a></div>Laurahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01354942888519762512noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7065667238646891957.post-46716643858776906202011-11-07T17:55:00.000-06:002011-11-07T17:55:55.508-06:00Fun with PhotoshopI couldn't sleep last night so I decided to redecorate a stranger's home. I looked online for a listed house that was unfurnished (easier to edit) and found this 1980 Texas split-level with amazing Mexican hex tile. The same tile was used throughout the ground floor of my dad's hotel when I was growing up, and I always thought it was so cool.<br />
<br />
Here are the original pics of the listing followed by my magic! <br />

Paint the walls a warm white, paint the built-ins (I had to just grab some image online because I couldn't figure out how to change the color of the wood), remove the mirrored wall and replace with some accent wall paper that mimics the geometric floor, replace the <i>two</i> ceiling fans with Mediterranean-style lighting and keep the stained molding. I actually would totally keep the molding around the window too but it was too difficult to keep it in the edit. I love the nailhead trim on the club chairs but the leather ottoman is weird in the light of day. Maybe a big barn wood coffee table would be great.<br />

That weird wrought iron thing next to the stairs actually looks through to the floor of the kitchen. I wonder if that was original to the house? It's so strange. Cover it up with a big ol' vintage map of Texas and maybe some wainscoting on the other side in the kitchen.<br />

I added the same geo wall paper to the inside of the bar and replaced the mirrored back with more decorative tile. It's a little much but I had fun playing with it. Maybe some colorful glass tiles with some metallics mixed in to mirror the aluminum bull skull on the opposite wall... I keep forgetting this isn't real life! :)<br />
<br />
I just did this to pass time but it turned out so pretty that I had to share it! Of course it's completely wonky and the later the night went on the more sloppy I got with the editing, but I'm so into this style that I just invented! I blogged a lot about this wedding craft so I might as well post the results, huh? I didn't get a good shot of the ring bearer's accessories, but if you look closely you can see the bow tie and his mom holding the ring pillow. I also whipped up a headband for Kate using the first bow tie I attempted that came out too small.<br />
<br />
I seem to remember snapping a photo of the guy who caught the garter sporting my hard work as a sweatband (I'm not making any sarcastic implications here; I was really excited when he displayed my handiwork!) but that photo does not exist on my camera. I'm not surprised. My friend, Mr. Cabernet, may have told me to delete it or it's possible he accidentally handed me someone else's camera.<br />
<br />
It was such a beautiful, fun and unique wedding and I was happy to be a part of it! Enjoy some more of the photos..<br />

I used this idea to distribute verses to girls at the Confirmation retreat last January to supplement a talk I was giving. The girls loved them and many of them actually placed their verses carefully back inside and tucked them away for safe keeping.<br />

For some reason I offered to take photos at Shotwell Stadium (a high school football field) in the middle of July because I thought the sports team needed some fresh promotional photos before the season started and because I wanted an excuse to rent a wide-angle lens. It was more than 100 degrees outside, so we did this all in about 10 minutes. I'm mostly pleased with how they turned out, but I would have spent a lot more time barking orders about who should stand where if it had been, oh, only 90 degrees.<br />

Unfortunately Mila's mom's photos got "stolen" from her <a href="http://milasdaydreams.blogspot.com/">blog</a> so quickly that she doesn't even have them up anymore, but they're still all over the internet.<br />
<br />
Austin requested a picture of Kate for our anniversary, so using those photos as inspiration, here's what I ended up with! I LOVE it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAzZg0D84ZHNByVgRbHSzQ7Y8_Lna10xm8laq8nqKqWGh0RjdFE8IJGIRECwoTzGvaibnJgVXPEOnQP3mRYtB2k9kar34qZ4MJ4sc4NopVWOUtUTKPkQq9feChYswRQYUCeMiKYsDAZcY/s1600/Picnic-3a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="256" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAzZg0D84ZHNByVgRbHSzQ7Y8_Lna10xm8laq8nqKqWGh0RjdFE8IJGIRECwoTzGvaibnJgVXPEOnQP3mRYtB2k9kar34qZ4MJ4sc4NopVWOUtUTKPkQq9feChYswRQYUCeMiKYsDAZcY/s320/Picnic-3a.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>Laurahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01354942888519762512noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7065667238646891957.post-19402497530205754292011-10-11T11:53:00.000-05:002011-10-11T11:53:10.466-05:00Wedding collection complete Here comes the bride... all dressed in ivory.<br />
<br />
I've blogged about this project a few times, so let's take a look back and see how it compares, shall we? For instance, <a href="http://kellerwoman.blogspot.com/2011/08/back-in-sewing-saddle.html">here</a> you can see the pleated satin trim is <i>totally </i>silver, not taupe as it appears in the picture. I also only used a tiny bit of the velvet leaves I ordered because they just looked flat. Thankfully I found some silk hydrangeas in the perfect color.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJ0M_KYKZ-IwMKZi3Uk95udKlPsqv6BanihO2f5MTgX9v_gzaGLSJzu2KgzmlUKRGpTKdpK_FU5OzKZX-UClLpEYa0EjEcXAwq_q2XO8URTRMDPhnDbmhELsqk3DheniaSkWCFq4WZmps/s320/ring-bearer-and-garter.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" width="262" /></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Ring pillow, bow tie and garter</td></tr>
</tbody></table>The <a href="http://kellerwoman.blogspot.com/2011/03/autumn-wedding-bells.html">color scheme</a> also changed a bit from what we originally talked about. Emily's bridesmaid dresses were originally going to be a taupe color but based on her bevy of blonde bridesmaids, she decided to go with a more complimentary crimson.<br />
<br />
These were so hard to photograph – probably because of the colors and the <strike>ticking time bomb</strike> soon-to-wake baby – but hopefully you get the gist of it.<br />
<br />
<br />
I'm a little sad I didn't take any pictures of the sewing process, but it was night time AND I was in the groove. But I'd be happy to provide a step-by-step if anybody asks.<br />
<br />
In the next month I'll add another photo of the headband I'm going to make Kate with all the leftover scraps. She and <a href="http://kellerwoman.blogspot.com/2010/06/happy-birthday-necktie-onesies.html">Liam</a> (the ring bearer) have to get a picture together!<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I added a handle to the bottom for 2-year-old Liam to hold on to. The rings won't actually be attached to the pillow. He's just walking because he's so cute!</td></tr>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I sewed a two-inch strip of silk with a 1/2 inch pocket for the elastic to thread through. I haven't done any sewing since Kate was born. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOySwVxR6o9f7W4-QStQy9j9Za3t-h7Um8v8cbAZza9nW5s8ALwMkf4SjwiCIrjjEmrwMBir2fspJ9_8keu16ZxBAcPU-z7K4ClE7BzWGNY3ELgrqas3-pB2STVKcpx1qu1b45rAdBD-o/s1600/3months1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" qaa="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOySwVxR6o9f7W4-QStQy9j9Za3t-h7Um8v8cbAZza9nW5s8ALwMkf4SjwiCIrjjEmrwMBir2fspJ9_8keu16ZxBAcPU-z7K4ClE7BzWGNY3ELgrqas3-pB2STVKcpx1qu1b45rAdBD-o/s320/3months1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
But that's about to change as I just ordered the supplies I need to make my friend's ring bearer pillow and bow tie and her garter! I first wrote about it <a href="http://kellerwoman.blogspot.com/2011/03/autumn-wedding-bells.html">here</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1rbUwi9ncSjMWAfqmi46G-GDPXPOZu6zEqkWkI4xKnoiMatciaFt0EPjSwmUuZpsC0P9QD714QAJWFy2nKcqP98Gj4clhfACcy6dS0JVVxT_jRsH5gezaARlavChXInaUTnQLWXIK298/s1600/pillow-materials.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="105" qaa="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1rbUwi9ncSjMWAfqmi46G-GDPXPOZu6zEqkWkI4xKnoiMatciaFt0EPjSwmUuZpsC0P9QD714QAJWFy2nKcqP98Gj4clhfACcy6dS0JVVxT_jRsH5gezaARlavChXInaUTnQLWXIK298/s400/pillow-materials.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">They were my first ever purchases on Etsy. The Dupioni silk in the middle is from a seller in India so I'm excited to tell Emily it's made of "imported silk." Hopefully that will minimize the disappointment when it comes out crooked with last-minute hot glue strings all over it.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I haven't even started the project and I already feel a little like Denise when she is commissioned to sew a shirt for Theo. Anybody? No? Here. <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crnPfls0fHw">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crnPfls0fHw</a>.</div>Laurahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01354942888519762512noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7065667238646891957.post-64720333404025717282011-08-18T20:30:00.001-05:002011-08-22T11:53:19.636-05:00The solution is clear.<div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">This is a beautiful glass bowl handed down to me by my grandma. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibemD7MxistFb64THeVnD-zXFgpRE83wdlKJyCm3fCv56TtVCYDUiucQSpTrjr_2FnJaSE5-i2iCDUJcdqyv96dVeMNwAbWsmm6LTuDV5gTy-rS5Eehf46aW64F-Rxo_VWBpFBYk2XsKg/s1600/1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibemD7MxistFb64THeVnD-zXFgpRE83wdlKJyCm3fCv56TtVCYDUiucQSpTrjr_2FnJaSE5-i2iCDUJcdqyv96dVeMNwAbWsmm6LTuDV5gTy-rS5Eehf46aW64F-Rxo_VWBpFBYk2XsKg/s320/1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Here's a better view of the etched design. She told me I should use it for serving ice. I later saw a bowl just like this on Mad Men. Peggy served ice in it. Grandma knows her stuff.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiaHZt2aicsvLtK00TFhn1AGtcXpApWwtKB3C_AsRbTXPH8HRPsj7EmO6NqA9MjQ1CIFbZAuWjTHQF8dqmL0Upcm_hz_iuWAkjA6ZHVYFoUXIPwEH1u7jua-TrV_yRjud8oWGgKvnSH7w/s1600/2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiaHZt2aicsvLtK00TFhn1AGtcXpApWwtKB3C_AsRbTXPH8HRPsj7EmO6NqA9MjQ1CIFbZAuWjTHQF8dqmL0Upcm_hz_iuWAkjA6ZHVYFoUXIPwEH1u7jua-TrV_yRjud8oWGgKvnSH7w/s320/2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: center;">Then, we decided to quit messing with it and let it dry completely for three whole weeks. We figured once the water dried up, the suction would be gone and the inner bowl would plop right out onto the pot holder.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDD264Sej9wfeWynHkdycc94LiqOK-66gW-AA1ZxYQeHiui85ZhyphenhyphenN4GhtMIv2ecBqOfD47HhL5AoJiTXIDYnhHE3q7VI7m675wMmNJHkqbq5R8ASsDJ3Cos6IkQBc8qRk1vkGk-6cqdO0/s1600/8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDD264Sej9wfeWynHkdycc94LiqOK-66gW-AA1ZxYQeHiui85ZhyphenhyphenN4GhtMIv2ecBqOfD47HhL5AoJiTXIDYnhHE3q7VI7m675wMmNJHkqbq5R8ASsDJ3Cos6IkQBc8qRk1vkGk-6cqdO0/s320/8.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">So. It's three weeks later. No water's left and those suckers are still hanging on to each other for dear life. So, given the disposable nature of bowl #2, I decide the solution is clear. Bust it out.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqqJAjcmn4hmZLje3HGWIO6TDWNmH9xS9EtnCBGcGIn3dUZxWp-77OGjj-Ie4eiRIyrcjslODTxUdx_05FuirPBO35T_0a_t7T1QMDZuI61fEckHIcjKODw7NGeEiOt55aJl6TxO6y6-4/s1600/9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqqJAjcmn4hmZLje3HGWIO6TDWNmH9xS9EtnCBGcGIn3dUZxWp-77OGjj-Ie4eiRIyrcjslODTxUdx_05FuirPBO35T_0a_t7T1QMDZuI61fEckHIcjKODw7NGeEiOt55aJl6TxO6y6-4/s320/9.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiC9nEPX33KwU7e5rIztk4d0UTu6mkYvUrP6cs2sHJt0oJUuwjppPDHrvRWVVLGF4A3gUuJP_WNDT2Sz5R9XysX33WemSp4Dw5Zz5DQYfGare4AurqhOZADAJUkcL4xrZnLaX6aEcvaqNs/s1600/kate-baptism-3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiC9nEPX33KwU7e5rIztk4d0UTu6mkYvUrP6cs2sHJt0oJUuwjppPDHrvRWVVLGF4A3gUuJP_WNDT2Sz5R9XysX33WemSp4Dw5Zz5DQYfGare4AurqhOZADAJUkcL4xrZnLaX6aEcvaqNs/s320/kate-baptism-3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
It's made with two boxes of white cake mix and three nine-inch layers. I made the filling and icing from scratch, but I see <i>absolutely</i> nothing wrong with using a cake mix.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.cakeboss.com/raspberryfilling.aspx">Here's the recipe</a> I used for the raspberry filling. I skipped the raspberry liqueur since liquor isn't sold in grocery stores here and I was not about to make a special trip for two tablespoons of anything!<br />
<br />
Once I baked the three layers, I cut the tops off to be as level as possible and slopped on the filling. It becomes a nice gelatin-like texture if you leave it in the fridge long enough. I was afraid it would be a little too thin and turn the buttercream pink around the edges, but it worked very well. If you look at the picture of the cake on that site, you'll see it's better to circle the edges of your layers with icing (imagine outlining the filling on the layer) so it doesn't seep out, but I had to get it filled and stacked the night before I made the icing.<br />
<br />
Here are the videos I used for the icing: <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLcCbN2I4xI">recipe</a> (plus lemon extract) and <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqvL4zhVbE8">smoothing technique</a>. If I'd had more time I would have been more careful and decorated the edges for a crisper look, but it didn't work out that way.<br />
<br />
For the cross, I rolled out some premade white fondant and traced a scallop pattern on top of it, then cut it out with a knife. I punched holes in it (a must for the pretty eyelet look!) with a round tip and then made some royal icing to add the detail. Royal icing consists of some meringue powder, a lot of powdered sugar and a little warm water. I don't have the measurements, because I only needed a little bit so I just tossed it together. I tried to do a star scallop around the bottom with the leftover royal icing but it was too warm from being in my hands so it got kind of melty. At that point I just needed to get it done so I could get the rest of the house ready for the big party!<br />
<br />
The rose is just a strip of fondant -- maybe 3/4 inch? -- rolled into itself. I did it several times until it turned out right.Laurahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01354942888519762512noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7065667238646891957.post-82542544261616988652011-07-14T03:20:00.002-05:002011-07-15T11:17:16.052-05:00That be one fun day!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijC_HFLfcn1f3tNp4rHbpoop_Z_AUAFkHQ5KHqqeCLkSk7jdkIjgu_sCqRIdry_4mH-lhMYFM9NHcplDGjfDqOCTVN-To9RpDzbg10WjOZ1h1kx4s9AEd2IsLaTgQDQN7iDVnOsa6U0-E/s1600/blog4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="256" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijC_HFLfcn1f3tNp4rHbpoop_Z_AUAFkHQ5KHqqeCLkSk7jdkIjgu_sCqRIdry_4mH-lhMYFM9NHcplDGjfDqOCTVN-To9RpDzbg10WjOZ1h1kx4s9AEd2IsLaTgQDQN7iDVnOsa6U0-E/s320/blog4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
After months and months of talking about taking these pictures, we finally did it! My friend, whose husband is a B-1 pilot, first suggested it some time last year. But the winter was too cold, the spring went by too fast, the dress took a while to order, I became a mom... and if we hadn't done it today it never would have happened because these two are moving to a land far, far away in a matter of days!<br />

We weren't able to get on to the flight line to take pics with the B-1s that are actually in service, but this bad boy worked out just fine.<br />
<br />
If you notice, the sidewalk is wet in some of the photos. We had a little<i> issue</i> with sprinklers, which threatened to derail the entire shoot. :)<br />

</div><div style="text-align: left;">It's funny – in some ways it's similar to the <a href="http://kellerwoman.blogspot.com/2011/02/abracadabranursery.html">virtual nursery</a> I made a while ago, but in other ways it's completely different.<br />
<br />
I didn't put the finishing touches in there until a couple weeks after the baby came home. I took a look around and instantly thought, "vintage!" It wasn't really my goal, but it totally worked out that way and I love it.<br />
<br />
Shall we take a tour?<br />
<br />
This mirror came from my grandma's house. My aunts gave it to me when she passed away. It's made out of plastic. I love the gaudy gold pop it gives the room. <br />

The craft hoops are filled with leftover fabric I had after making the birds you'll see below. The silhouette is of my mother-in-law at the age of 6, I believe. I used a stamp to paint the face of that hamper, which I've had for a long time. If you can see the ivory pillow on the bed, that's made with with two Pier 1 napkins sewn together. The little white shelf holds a bud vase of my mom's and my dad's silver baby cup and rattle. The infamous sewing table sits beside the bed and is normally stacked with dirty bottles!<br />
<br />

I spy a baby below! Above her hangs my homemade mobile. It turned out completely different than I intended, but I like the dimension that the branches add to the room. I found the pattern for the birds <a href="http://www.spoolsewing.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/birdpattern1-1.pdf">here</a>.<br />

Like the crib skirt? The look was inspired (stolen) from <a href="http://www.bhg.com/crafts/tailored-crib-skirt/">this website</a>, but the pattern on that site made no sense to me. A gal from high school emailed me a step-by-step of how she made hers, and I found that much simpler. Not simple, but simpl<i>er.</i><br />
<br />

This hand-stitched quilt is more than 60 years old! It was my dad's. It's pretty worn, but it's (mostly) clean and soft and has held together beautifully.<br />

Here we have a gift from Kate's great-grandma, an owl from Pier 1 that I am obsessed with, and a little lamb from my friend that prays "Now I lay me down to sleep" when you squeeze it. Kate doesn't sleep in the crib often. Once she starts, I'll clear this stuff out.<br />

Here are my beloved grandparent photos! I love the way the concept turned out, even though we're still missing one. Workin' on that! <br />
<br />

Austin made the little K above the dresser. Before she was born I handed him a wooden block, a wooden K, fabric swatches, scrap paper, Mod Podge, paint, a staple gun and more. He was instructed to do something -- anything -- to contribute a personal touch to the nursery. (Other than replacing that awful brass ceiling fan. PTL!) He chose a sparkly gold knit to cover the block and painted the K yellow and gold. Cute! I wish the lampshade showed up in the photos. It's killer.<br />
<br />

And that's it. What do you think?</div>Laurahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01354942888519762512noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7065667238646891957.post-84704342345092950202011-06-21T14:21:00.002-05:002011-06-22T13:09:51.135-05:00A year's worth of birthdaysHi, handful of blog readers. I'm back! It's been more than a month since I've posted anything, and for a good reason: motherhood!<br />
<br />
Now that my little bitty baby is one month old today (which is the purpose of this blog post!) I'm a little more comfortable putting her out there, so to speak.<br />
<br />
So since the trend these days is to take a picture of your baby holding a sign for how many months he/she is turning, I decided to take it a step further and whip up a little birthday outfit. And by whip up, I mean labor over it for 30 seconds at a time all day long.<br />
<br />
Since this is my first craft project since she was born, I wanted to make it special... so I went ahead and created all the numbers for up to 11 months now for both consistency's sake and to save myself time in the future.<br />
<br />
I made number outlines in Photoshop and printed them large enough to fill up these little 4x4 fabric swatches that I received from Land of Nod. I KNEW they'd come in handy one of these days!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhawH9pDUfu5pV2177KxE1Ddrjpf9ZC8luz864rY7FvXTR7hk0mEU4o_mCx8Z9JBamtI-B6kpjK3isvfBcSJaNTlTcgsocer0gnPcyXQt_EVGFo0e0A_tA-7I6c67LKllSo9NzmEDWzWAE/s1600/bday-onesie-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhawH9pDUfu5pV2177KxE1Ddrjpf9ZC8luz864rY7FvXTR7hk0mEU4o_mCx8Z9JBamtI-B6kpjK3isvfBcSJaNTlTcgsocer0gnPcyXQt_EVGFo0e0A_tA-7I6c67LKllSo9NzmEDWzWAE/s320/bday-onesie-1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
I then ironed the swatches on to Heat&Bond and taped the pieces up to the front door to trace them, a la third grade art class. I'm sure there was an easier way, but mommy brain got in the way.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEVjcNSnFsdh0OT8MPx9vYnVoZFXHqMEwA74DfJ6BAe8anF2hARrwiIaXoUQhnO7oa4sANSMyG5NvGDS9YdvqV9ldA7VRfcBPHJCGL658hJGdops9_-CUzKUxysDGiJP_CllDM4cbrBfs/s1600/bday-onesie-2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEVjcNSnFsdh0OT8MPx9vYnVoZFXHqMEwA74DfJ6BAe8anF2hARrwiIaXoUQhnO7oa4sANSMyG5NvGDS9YdvqV9ldA7VRfcBPHJCGL658hJGdops9_-CUzKUxysDGiJP_CllDM4cbrBfs/s320/bday-onesie-2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
Plus, I had a human strapped to me.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_KLzvdTdkF9dOdZ5nDL6gxCIjnUHoR2VOBveCoM3zR7mtQXZwX4hpi5qvv3Bn2VL9Ql0ZJdu9mZpyYsjiz9CWP1kqU1StrS_DX8wXWX4eqwj3DbmvzD3RrAwmoYKnsXOGsHG5xlFaF0M/s1600/wrap-nap.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_KLzvdTdkF9dOdZ5nDL6gxCIjnUHoR2VOBveCoM3zR7mtQXZwX4hpi5qvv3Bn2VL9Ql0ZJdu9mZpyYsjiz9CWP1kqU1StrS_DX8wXWX4eqwj3DbmvzD3RrAwmoYKnsXOGsHG5xlFaF0M/s320/wrap-nap.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
I cut out the one, ironed it on to a newborn onesie that's <i>almost</i> too small and sewed a zigzag stitch around it. I saved the rest of the numbers in an envelope in my sewing box so they'd be easy to find and place on whatever size white onesie fits her on the 21st of every month.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjcO0ELDoS3yCCRnORMcQpFJzpuJKNSjE9vg9sAZeIVjLPzK3O6T8INHqopwyE6R6_pDcfnKF_H5L4gG6YUrJvxOCt9zOea-CyR727Ys0gJ6dmrzxfQLsNyWp-1cUMrU0mUxauhLCGJDQ/s1600/bday-onesie-3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjcO0ELDoS3yCCRnORMcQpFJzpuJKNSjE9vg9sAZeIVjLPzK3O6T8INHqopwyE6R6_pDcfnKF_H5L4gG6YUrJvxOCt9zOea-CyR727Ys0gJ6dmrzxfQLsNyWp-1cUMrU0mUxauhLCGJDQ/s320/bday-onesie-3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiY8J1obHBEwP7PPt264YQ6mzVf4k9kPYgQJdlpboDlY7owcnjrALqH_YJu-Y0DHzNrk-tza2V1kJyOyGPgl6qTJ6UwB4AMHRxHQT6IjwTf74oh5JZCQ5KUyd8MNU54rIVyapqVo6o67bE/s1600/bday-onesie-3-5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiY8J1obHBEwP7PPt264YQ6mzVf4k9kPYgQJdlpboDlY7owcnjrALqH_YJu-Y0DHzNrk-tza2V1kJyOyGPgl6qTJ6UwB4AMHRxHQT6IjwTf74oh5JZCQ5KUyd8MNU54rIVyapqVo6o67bE/s320/bday-onesie-3-5.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
And, without further ado, here's my beautiful one-month old!<br />

We also painted the walls of the baby room and got a few other projects done. I'm so grateful to them for making the 180-mile trip in the rain just to help a girl out!<br />

This grainy one was taken late into the dark hours on Sunday so it's really hard to make out how crisp and bright this baby is!Laurahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01354942888519762512noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7065667238646891957.post-8057866387758844872011-04-06T14:54:00.001-05:002011-04-06T14:57:39.077-05:00Rules of Engagement1. Create a memory worth remembering<br />
2. Trick your girlfriend into getting dressed up<br />
3. Bring along a hidden camera (or seven)<br />

Our friend Tyler gets an A+ for his proposal last night! Check our <a href="http://thekellermanfamily.blogspot.com/2011/04/tubeday-tuesday-flash-mob-engagement.html">other blog</a> for a video of the big moment, and enjoy a couple of the pics I was able to snap. (I'll only dwell on the positive here, ignoring the fact that most of my shots feature the backs of people's heads.)<br />

Here's how it went down: Tyler was live on the air at Taste of Abilene last night -- which really didn't make any sense, since he's a sports reporter. In the middle of his live shot, a dude with a microphone walked up behind him and started singing "All My Loving." A flash mob started to form, and Tyler eventually joined in, making his way over to his unsuspecting girlfriend at a nearby table.<br />

She said yes.Laurahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01354942888519762512noreply@blogger.com0
